The best tv commercials and video advertisements are hitting new heights in creativity.  Every month we see new television commercials and advertisements that catch our eye and evoke feelings. For the third year in a row, we offer you our list of the Best Television Commercials of 2024.  Hope you enjoy as much as we enjoyed making this list.

5. Freshpet – Work From Anywhere

What We Like

On the surface this ad from Freshpet may not seem all that exciting, but when you peel back the onion there are layers of greatness.  First off it taps into the remote workforce that is sweeping the nation.  This will get many people’s attention as they no doubt have bosses that do not like their new “work from anywhere” life.

Secondly there product placement and explanation is great, short and to the point.  How many funny commercials are out there that you talk about and don’t even remember or mention the sponsor – “Mike, Mike, Mike, Hump Day” for instance.  What was the brand?

Lastly, it is funny and surprises the viewer like a quick one-liner. The dog even has an expression when she insults the dog food before getting the boot!  Well done Freshpet, good boy.

What We Don’t Like

Not much to dislike. Maybe put her in a cabin with two dogs tilting their heads.

4.  BetMGM – For Everyone But Tom

What We Like

There is a long list of things to like in this Ad Spot for BetMGM. Narrated by the universally loved and a colorful raconteur, Vince Vaughn.  Not only that, every Bro out there who bets on sports is a massive Vince Vaughn fan. Excellent casting.

The commercial hits you right in the face with the first lines of dialogue.  The viewer immediately understands what the product is and who it’s for. Yes we are ending a sentence with ‘for’.  This ad spot is a quick witted boxer throwing jabs rapidly — the Tom Brady of Spreadsheets to Tim Birdie the Pool Hustler.  The viewer can’t wait to watch this again which is pretty much the goal of television commercials. BetMGM cashed in a 10-team parlay with this ad, which is why we chose it to be one of the best television commercials of 2024. They also have Gambler’s Anonymous message across the bottom, AND it’s large enough to read. Kudos for that.

What We Don’t Like

Wayne Gretzky’s role might have been a little more developed, but we are splitting hairs!  Well done.

3. VRBO – Nick Saban Host

What We Like

VRBO has made our list again.  They keep churning out entertaining ad spots and this one is no different.  That’s why we selected it to be on our list of the best television commercials of 2024.  Perhaps the funniest part is that Nick Saban is playing himself vs a random nameless old inn keeper.  VRBO’s service of Vacation Home Rental remains forefront throughout the commercial and captures all the nuances of renting a vacation home, but …

What We Don’t Like

What we don’t like is that this commercial is a complete hypocrisy!  Anyone who has ever reserved a VRBO knows there are always a ton of rules!  First and foremost, check-in at a VRBO isn’t until 3 or 4pm – at the end of the day you paid for!  Then there are the fees, service fees, cleaning fees, late fees, pet fees.  It is anything but rule-agnostic.

Lastly I don’t know many people who reserve vacation houses with a host living in it.  In fact I have never heard of anyone doing that since my parents in the 80s stayed at Bed & Breakfast Inns for 1-2 nights.  This commercial by VRBO is very funny, but it’s congratulating themselves on solving a problem that doesn’t exist and misrepresenting its brand.  They should be throwing shade at hotels, not themselves whether they realize it or not.  I say that as a VRBO customer for 20+ years.

2. BMW – Talkin like Walken

What We Like

The 2024 BMW television commercial “Talkin’ Like Walken” stands out like a peacock in a pigeon coop. Casting Christopher Walken was akin to adding wasabi to sushi—unexpected and exciting. His distinctive cadence and enigmatic persona elevated the commercial from a mere advertisement into must-see television, making the ad both memorable and impactful.

The ad’s premise—individuals attempting to imitate Walken’s unmistakable speech—served as a clever metaphor for the BMW i5’s unique position in the electric vehicle market. It’s also extremely relatable as who doesn’t have a friend that does Christopher Walken imitations.  This is definitely one of the best television commercials of 2024!

What We Don’t Like … Sort Of

While Walken’s performance was undeniably captivating, his larger than life presence overshadowed the product significantly. All viewers will remember this commercial, but few will remember it was for BMW’s electric car. Then there is the niche humor element that many brands are making now, probably because their execs are in their 50s.

The humor derived from imitating Walken’s distinctive speech pattern may not have resonated universally, particularly among younger audiences unfamiliar with him This may have limited the ad’s appeal and effectiveness. Additionally the focus on celebrity and humor overshadowed the opportunity to showcase the vehicle’s unique selling points, leaving viewers with a memorable ad but limited information about the car itself.  But none of that really matters to Gen-X.  Fabulous 2024 television commercial!

1. Irn-Bru – Mannschaft

What We Like

The Irn-Bru Mannschaft commercial stood out in 2024 because it nailed the formula for a truly great ad—humor, cultural relevance, and brand personality, all wrapped in a tight, entertaining package.  This is one of the best television commercials of 2024 because it wasn’t just funny—it was smart funny, with a universally relatable message, making it one of the most talked-about ads of the year.

Irn-Bru’s “Mannschaft” commercial masterfully blends Scottish pride with sharp humor, capturing attention through playful sexual innuendos surrounding the German word “Mannschaft,” meaning “team.” The ad features a kilt-clad Scottish fan delivering a rousing speech that humorously celebrates Scotland’s optimism ahead of Euro 2024, hoping to reach a “semi”. Hilarious and Clever!

What We Don’t Like

There is really not much to criticize about this 2024 television commercial except there are probably many people that just didn’t “get it”.

1. Oreo Twist On It

What We Don’t Like

Please stop shoving this “Twist On It” nonsense down our throats. Nobody is doing it and nobody will ever do it.  You are not replacing a coin flip or rock, scissors, paper, but nice try 🙂

2. Indeed – Sound Engineer

What We Don’t Like

Nobody, and I mean Nobody, who works at a record label hires a Sound Engineer from placing an ad online. One of the first rules of marketing is understanding your product/service.  Stay in your lane Indeed, and understand who is using your product.  Nobody is hiring an actor on Indeed.
